David Ward is the Owner and Founder of City Roots Gardening. Born and raised in Red Deer, David knows firsthand the successes and challenges of the local climate. A love for all things gardening was instilled in him at an early age and has only grown deeper as an adult. David has worked in local greenhouses to broaden his hands on experience and recently completed the Master Gardener Training Program through Dalhousie University to further expand his knowledge.

Meet the Gardener

My Story

Growing up I spent much of my free time at my great-grandmother's home. She had an acreage on the outskirts of the Rocky Mountains and much of that land was covered in flower and vegetable gardens.  It is here where a love for all things gardening was instilled in me at an early age.  I learned how to grow my own food, tend to plants, and that pulling weeds had its benefits – especially if it meant the Blue Jays game was not coming on the tv until the wheel barrel was full of weeds. (Great-grandma never wavered from that one rule!) The best part, though, was always the harvest.  Filling up buckets with peas to be shelled (and eaten fresh when no one was looking), piling heaps of potatoes and carrots across the lawn, followed by hours together canning and freezing the bounty in her kitchen are some of my most treasured memories.

Fast-forward to present time and I am passionately pursuing gardening for a living. I have been fortunate to work in local greenhouses to broaden my hands on experience, and I recently completed the Master Gardener Training Program through Dalhousie University to further expand my knowledge.

My desire to help people grow beautiful and bountiful gardens is driven by my heart to serve.  I believe that everyone who wants to provide for themselves through a garden deserves to reap what they sow.  I am passionate about employing sustainable techniques and methods, and enjoy coming alongside others to show them what is possible! With a background in customer service, a strong work ethic and a personalized approach, I aim to help others succeed with City Roots Gardening.

In my spare time, well, you will still find me in the garden! You may also find me cheering on my beloved Oilers and Blue Jays, reading a book (especially anything by John Grisham), fishing at the lake, enjoying the warmth of a campfire, spending time in the kitchen or in front of the grill.  I’m blessed to have a loving wife who supports and motivates me, a mini labradoodle to keep us active and entertained, and an amazing group of friends and family.

Thank you for taking time to read about me. I would welcome the opportunity to connect with you and explore how I can support your gardening journey.
